Pride vs. Humility

May 13, 2022
“God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble”

1 Peter 5:5

Humility is the opposite of pride.  Humility says life is all about the Lord Jesus Christ and everything He has done.  Pride says look at what I do and what I have accomplished.  Pride brings the focus and honor away from God to the single letter between the “p-r” and the “d-e” and that letter is “I.”

Pride is the foundation of all sin going all the way back to the dawn of time.  Lucifer’s pride caused him to fall from Heaven as he sought to exalt his throne above God’s.  Adam and Eve fell because of their pride in their disobedience to the single command God gave them in the Garden of Eden to not eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  Pride brings one out of total God consciousness to self-consciousness and bends the human being towards the flesh and away from the Holy Spirit.  Pride says we can achieve Christ-likeness by means of our own strength, religion, wisdom, and will-power.

Humility is the foundation of all Christ-likeness.  The only thing Jesus Christ ever personally said about Himself was in Matthew 11:29 when He said, “I am meek and lowly in heart.”  The characteristics of the Humanity of Christ matches the description of His Divine title as the humble, obedient Sacrificial Lamb of God.  We must begin to learn of Jesus Christ so we may conduct ourselves like Him.  He should be the standard for our everyday living both morally and spiritually for living a pure and holy life.  This cannot be done under our own will-power and motivation, but by the Power and Grace of God.  Faith in Christ opens our hearts to receive the Grace of God in allowing the moving and operation of the Holy Spirit to mold our conduct and morality into the likeness of Jesus Christ.  We learn of Jesus Christ by feeding upon His Word daily to gain a greater revealing knowledge of Him through the Word of God and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us into the Truth of His Character.

Humility says we cannot do it under our own strength and power, but by the power and strength of the Almighty God who quickens us daily.  Humility leads us straight to the Cross of Christ where the greatest act of self-denial and humility took place.  Humility takes us to the Word of God to gain knowledge and understanding on how to live humbly before God.  Humility brings us to our knees in the closet of prayer to daily seek the Will of God and let it be done.  Humility yields to the operation of the Holy Spirit to allow the Fruit of the Spirit to blossom in our daily conduct and morality.

As the morality of the world is decaying in pride, Christ-like humility raises us out of our pride into the morality of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit.  Humbling ourselves under the mighty hand of the Lord, allows Him to lift us up in honor to the delight of the Heavenly Father who will uphold us all of our days.
